Join us for a wonderful journey of self discovery in Rishikesh, India, which nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas.
We are offering you a unique opportunity to improve your English with teachers from The Asana School of English Language in Ireland and at the same time enjoy daily yoga practice in India.
Rishikesh, renowned for its sages and spirituality (the valley of the Saints), is the undisputed yoga capital of the world.
The yoga programme that we have selected for you is a combination of traditional Hatha yoga with Vinyasa or flow Yoga. The main difference between traditional Hatha and Vinyasa or flow Yoga is the amount of time spent in each pose. Vinyasa yoga is a faster paced type of Yoga in that co-ordinated breath brings you swiftly from one pose to the next. This form of yoga has been embraced by the West in recent years possibly because Western yoga gives a lot of importance to the physical and mental benefits of the practice. The more traditional Hatha yoga embraces stillness even though it can also be strenuous in its own right and sees the goal of yoga as more spiritual rather than physical or mental. Our special combination yoga class strengthens the body while at the same time rendering it more flexible, relaxes the mind by slowing down the incessant internal chatter, promotes better breathing patterns as the flow of postures are carefully co-ordinated with the breath. For those seeking a deeper/more spiritual practice, both the more meditative aspects of the class as well as our very special location close to the river Ganges, enhance a sense of inner peace and stillness.
Rishikesh, is the yoga capital of the world. It is in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand and nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas. As well as being known as the world capital of yoga, it is also known as 'the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas'. It is known as a pilgrimage town and regarded by Hindus as being a very holy place. Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge. This is an ideal place to enjoy your English language and yoga programme.
Accommodation during our English and Yoga programme is in a local guest house. Rooms are modest and clean with a private bathroom. Basic internet facilities are available although we do recommend getting a local Indian Sim card during your stay. Accommodation is within walking distance from our English and Yoga classes. What is so special about Rishikesh?
Apart from being the world capital of yoga , it is here that the Beatles came in In February 1968, to attend an advanced Transcendental Meditation (TM) training session at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Amid widespread media attention, their visit was one of the band's most productive periods. Led by George Harrison's commitment, the Beatles' interest in the Maharishi changed Western attitudes about Indian spirituality and encouraged the study of Transcendental Meditation. Along with a large entourage, the Beatles arrived in India and joined the group of 60 people who were training to be TM teachers, including musicians Donovan, Mike Love of the Beach Boys, and flautist Paul Horn. While there, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Harrison wrote many songs and Ringo Starr finished writing his first. Eighteen of those songs were recorded for The Beatles ("the White Album"), two songs appeared on the Abbey Road album, and others were used for various solo projects.
English language programme
During your two week holiday we offer you a 40 hour English language course (Monday to Friday).
How is the language course structured?
English classes take place Monday to Friday with a teacher from The Asana School of English, Ireland (www.asanaireland.com). Teaching at Asana is learner centered, interactive, communicative and task-based.
What is the Asana language learning philosophy?
The Asana school of English embraces a holistic philosophy which recognises the importance of developing and supporting the whole person. We place the learner at the centre of his or her own learning. We believe in active learning, the contrary of passive learning where students are spoon fed ‘information’.
We encourage our students to be curious, think for themselves and to discover (through experience) their own personal learning styles and to take responsibility for their own learning. There are many different learning styles (Visual, auditory, kinaesthetic etc.) and multiple intelligences. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate many of these elements into classroom activities. We endeavour to make use of story -telling, drama, music, songs, rhymes, movement and games as a way to stimulate our learners in a fun and effective way. By the end of the programme, learners will have prepared, produced and presented a project on their experience in India. This is a great way of putting TBL (Task based learning) into practice. Learners must work together in pairs/groups to ‘produce' something which can then be presented to the whole group. Our aim is that our learners will get to know themselves, their classmates, their international teachers and India. They will discover that English is more than just a subject to be studied at school, but a means of communicating with the world at large and a window opening on to cultural diversity. Our aim is that learners return home with increased self-esteem regarding the language as well as an understanding of a rich new culture.
