Most of us love travelling. Its an opportunity to experience another culture- taste its food, learn about its history and heritage, explore its diversity. It enriches us and when we return home we find that we have taken a little bit of that country away with us. It lives within us and becomes part of who we are. But hopefully we will have left something of ourselves behind too. Hopefully, we will have contributed positively to the lives of the people we have met. Hopefully we will have been good ambassadors for the countries we have travelled from. Hopefully we will have given as much as we have received. Working in disadvantaged schools or organisations gives us an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the country we have chosen to visit. But not only that, it gives us a deeper insight into how the country really works. We go beyond the picture postcard image of that country and delve into its complexities. Complexities which we may not be fully aware of had we stayed at the surface of our travelling experience. So, by giving we receive even more.
